OVERVIEW • visual: rena's casual outfit is a knee-length white dress with a split down the middle, brown laced-up boots, and a small white hat. underneath, she wears a pair of shorts. if she's not seen in this getup, rena is usually wearing a simple blue school uniform. full visual of each outfit is here! can come in a few flavors: thirteen (original series) or eighteen (slight gou anime spoilers). she was portrayed as approx. fifteen or sixteen in the DEEN anime. anywhere in-between is also fine! • voice: rena's voice actress is mai nakahara. she has a fairly high voice that can transition into a sort of baby talk when excited. she tends to make a lot of silly noises, but her most frequent is "hau". rena has a habit of repeating herself (usually when asking a question) as well. when she finds something or someone cute, she'll often say, "i want to take you home!" or "shooo kyute!" when in her cutesy persona, she'll sometimes refer to herself in the third person. if things are a little more serious, she'll use "i" instead of her name. you can hear her normal speaking voice right here. • personality: at first glance, rena appears sweet, friendly, playful, and airheaded. she's incredibly doting, taking care of and looking after those close to her. she's also empathetic and will put another's feelings before her own. one of her core traits is that she's an avid collector of "kyute" things, whether that be a person or object. her taste is a little strange, like finding restaurant mascots or ugly toys to be exceptionally adorable. when hyped up, she enters what her friends affectionately call "cute mode". despite putting on a front of a ditzy and happy girl, rena is actually quite melancholic. she does her best to strive towards a "happy" lifestyle, appreciating each day as if it's her last. she does not often show this side to others and will hide away in her secret base rather than express these feelings. however, she is described to be a "quiet blue flame" due to her resilience and silent tenacity. rena can be very perceptive, as she can usually understand people just by looking at their faces or eyes. if she finds someone to be lying, she's quick to point it out. on top of this, rena is rather intelligent, able to make elaborate plans or reason and deduce. she wholeheartedly believes that she is the reason for the divorce of her parents. she greatly dislikes her mother and is fiercely protective of her father. lastly, she believes in a holy deity of her home village named "oyashiro-sama". she does not take kindly to negative talk about them. • background: heavy series spoilers for higurashi no naku koro ni below! rena's given name is "reina". while she was born in hinamizawa, her family moved away for the sake of her mother's advancing career. soon after, her mother started an affair with a co-worker and became pregnant. a divorce followed. rena's father was devastated, and rena blames herself for not recognizing the issue earlier. she rejects her position as her mother's daughter, and insists on being called "rena" instead of "reina". she removed the "i" in her name because it represents "icky things". she remains very loyal to her father and she will go to, depending on the timeline, violent lengths to protect him. rena is sensitive about the topic of oyashiro-sama, who she believes cursed her for leaving hinamizawa as a young child. however, rather than being cursed, rena was actually afflicted with a very, very specific parasite called "hinamizawa syndrome". when the host leaves the village and is put under stress, it causes severe paranoia and hallucinations, and due to this, rena had been briefly hospitalized after harming others and herself. she recovered after moving back to hinamizawa and essentially starting her life over, though the parasite still resides inside her. if rena is put into a stressful situation, the symptoms of this disease can rear its head again. she spends much of her time "treasure hunting" in the village's junkyard in search of cute things. she even has a secret hideout in an abandoned van there. inside, there is a mattress, blankets, plushies and miscellaneous comfort items, and a lamp. she retreats here when she is depressed, sometimes sleeping inside overnight. OOC • backtagging: absolutely! i can be relatively slow at times, but i'm always happy to finish a thread. • threadhopping: if appropriate. • fourthwalling: no thank you. • offensive subjects: higurashi no naku koro ni is a violent series and rena's backstory in particular has some triggering material. here are some content warnings that apply to her: murder, gore, body horror (in the case of maggots), parasites and diseases, and extensive self-harm. i can very easily avoid these topics if asked! as for rena's triggers, she isn't privy to dishonesty, endangerment of her father, and negativity towards the deity oyashiro-sama.
